What exactly is a DBL?
A DBL (Daschner Bin Liner) is a disposable unit that can be placed in a patient's medication drawer or other dispensing container to keep the original container clean.
What is the advantage of using a DBL?
The DBL unit lines the original container so that if it becomes contaminated in any way, the DBL can easily and readily be replaced.
What benefits would this have for my patient?
By keeping a clean medication drawer, there is less chance for contamination. It also may decrease the spread of nosocomial infections.
How?
As most of us know from working in hospitals or other healthcare facilities, dirty patient medication drawers are seldom cleaned. As a matter of fact, presently there is no system of record keeping or logging to track the frequency of bin cleaning. The DBL offers a clean environment for the storage of patient medications. If it becomes soiled in any way, it can be readily replaced.
How would the DBLs be utilized?
Our vision is that when a patient is admitted to the hospital, he will be given a set of two DBLs. One would contain the patients medication, and be in the nurse's med cart. The other would be in the pharmacy being filled and checked for the next days medication. They would be supplied by pharmacy or central supply and be replaced evey three days.
What if my patient's drawer becomes soiled before that time?
There will be a separate supply of DBL's housed in a convenient dispenser attached to or within close proximity to the nurse's medication cart. If a bin becomes soiled it would simply be discarded and replaced with a new one.
How much will these cost?
The DBL will be inexpensive and incorporated into the patient's hospital stay much like the vanity bin each patient recieves upon admission. The amount of money the DBL could save the patient from possibly aquiring a nosocomial infection is priceless.
Where else could the DBL be used in a hospital or healthcare facilities?
The DBLs can be made to custom fit medication containers in the pharmacy that holds dispensing medications, unit dose carts, IV room medications, and Pyxis (R), drawers. A DBL bin liner could also be custom made to fit in a pneumatic tube when sending medication throughout the hospital. We all know from working in hospitals that pneumatic tubes are presently utilized for sending lab specimens with a sponge liner. These liners are then reused to send patient IV's or other "stat" medications. Think of the contamination that is spread throughout our hospitals! The DBL would be used once and then be replaced with a new liner. This could possibly have a dramatic effect on the spread of nosocomial infection.
