What is the DBL Solution?
The DBL Solution (Daschner Bin Liner) is a cost effective innovation created to decrease the spread of bacteria, cross-contamination, and nosocomial infection. It is the first proactive step in reducing bacteria, pathogens or other microbials from the medication drawers, carts, pharmacy bins and other affiliated equipment.

We want to share the backgrounds of the designers and the inception of the DBL Solution. Robin Hannan and Diane Funk have over forty years of experience as pharmacists, with most of their professional lives in the hospital environment.

One of the many functions of a hospital pharmacist is to verify the medication cart bins. The medication bin drawers are filled by a technician and checked for accuracy by a pharmacist.

The actual inception of the DBL happened one evening while Diane was checking the medication bins. She was frustrated at the thought of putting unit dose medications into a “dirty” or contaminated bin drawer with the knowledge that they would be sent up and administered to “sick” patients.

Diane discussed her concerns with Robin, and they agreed that any patient, especially one with a compromised immune system could acquire a deadly infection from a potentially contaminated drawer. Robin suggested the creation of a disposable bin liner that could be easily replaced with very little effort and a minimal cost.

The objective of the DBL Solution is to create a sanitary environment for patient medications, thus decreasing the risk of spreading nosocomial infections, which are becoming more difficult to treat with less available and effective antibiotics. It is our vision that the DBL Solution will positively impact the escalating problem of nosocomial infections by reducing the spread of this potentially deadly infection.
